How to Apply

The Sarah M. Hughes Foundation invites your letter of inquiry via the following online form. Letters of inquiry should not exceed one page. Our board of directors will review all letters of inquiry and respond to those we approve to advance in the process with a request to submit a proposal for funding. Those we do not approve to advance to the proposal stage are welcome to reapply in no less than one year from the date the initial letter of inquiry was submitted.

Funding Guidelines
We fund organizations primarily in the state of Washington. Our funding is generally restricted to nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) or similar tax-exempt status, educational institutions, or medical and/or research facilities.

The Sarah M. Hughes Foundation generally does not fund:

  • Research for which results and impact cannot be measured
  • Advertising
  • Golf tournaments and similar fundraising activities
  • Advocacy, political causes or events
  • Sacramental or theological functions of religious organizations
  • Operational expenses/existing deficits

Reporting Guidelines and Requirements

The Sarah M. Hughes Foundation requires most grantees to provide narrative and financial reports at the end of the applicable grant period.
